Ragui W. Sedeek, MD

Dr. Sedeek earned a dual high school diploma and a French Baccalaureate from a renowned catholic high school named “College De La Salle” in Cairo, Egypt. He was awarded the national valedictorian award in biological sciences from the Egyptian department of Education in 1995.

He then majored in biological sciences at University of California, Irvine where he was nominated for Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and he graduated Magna Cum Laude Bachelor of Science in biological sciences at the age of nineteen. Then he joined a Christian seminary in Anaheim, California where he participated in many volunteer opportunities and community outreach and services.

Afterwards, he went to medical school at Yale School of Medicine. He graduated from Yale with Cum Laude Medical Degree in 2004. It was after the second year of medical school that he realized he wanted to dedicate his career to the study of retinal diseases and surgeries. He published his medical thesis on “Cytomegalovirus Retinitis in the Highly Active Anti-Retrovial Era” in the American Journal of Ophthalmology in 2004.

He then went on to do a surgical internship year at the University of California, Los Angeles. From there, he completed a three year surgical residency in ophthalmology at the famous New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in Manhattan, New York. Then, he chose to do extra two years of subspecialized training in medical and surgical vitreo-retinal fellowship at the University of California, Davis Eye Center in Sacramento, California.

He continued to publish many articles in peer-reviewed journals and gave multiple lectures at several renowned institutions and national meetings. He has special research interests in the advancement of the understanding of the molecular signaling pathways underlying many of the diseases of the retina including diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular disease and age related macular degeneration as well as performing micro-invasive retinal surgery.

After finishing his training, he helped in founding a large center of excellence for retina care in Southern California where he practiced for seven years before he decided to join Shepard Eye Center in 2017.

On a personal note, he is happily married and is blessed with two daughters and one son. He enjoys taking part of the local Christian community services. His hobbies include playing the guitar, scuba diving, windsurfing, wakeboarding, and snowboarding among others. He is fluent in English, French and Arabic, and he continues to practice on his Spanish.
