If your skin is making you look older than you feel, you may benefit from skin rejuvenation. Improvement of the tone, texture and coloration of our skin is possible with several techniques. Skin peels, cosmeceutical products, laser or light therapy, and dermabrasion are common methods to improve the skin.
Skin peels are one of the simplest and most time-honored techniques used to rejuvenate aged skin. Most peels use a light application of a natural acid in the office to remove the surface layer of aged skin and promote younger, fresher skin.
Micropeels use a very light chemical application and can be performed with no downtime. Normal activities can be resumed and make-up can be reapplied immediately after the treatment. You usually never actually see peeling of the skin following a micropeel.
There are several acids that are commonly used in micropeels. Lactic acid is a natural alpha-hydroxy acid derived from milk sugar. Another alpha-hydroxy acid, glycolic acid, is made from fruit sugars. Also salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid, is frequently used for oily or acne-prone skin.
Stronger peels, usually using trichloroacetic acid (TCA), can achieve more aggressive results although the skin will visibly peel over several days. Much like recovering from sunburn, the surface layer of skin exfoliates revealing new skin is that is younger and refreshed.
