Protecting Your Vision During Central Coast Summers: A Guide to UV Safety

Central Coast summers bring long days, bright skies, and more time outdoors. Whether you are walking along the beach, driving through Santa Maria, gardening, or spending the afternoon with family, protecting your eyes from ultraviolet radiation should be part of your daily routine. UV exposure can affect the eyes over time, and protection is important even on cloudy days.

Why UV Protection Matters for Your Eyes

UV radiation is invisible, but repeated exposure can contribute to eye damage. Over time, unprotected sun exposure may increase the risk of cataracts and other conditions affecting the eyes and surrounding tissues. The effects are cumulative, which means the exposure you receive during everyday activities can add up over the years.

Choose Sunglasses That Block UV Rays

Dark lenses alone do not guarantee proper eye protection. When selecting sunglasses, look for lenses labeled as blocking 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays or providing UV400 protection. This is more important than the color, darkness, brand, or price of the lenses.

Polarized lenses can make outdoor activities more comfortable by reducing glare from water, pavement, and other reflective surfaces. However, polarization and UV protection are different features. Make sure your sunglasses provide full UV protection, whether or not the lenses are polarized.

Simple Ways to Practice UV Safety

A few consistent habits can help protect your vision throughout the Central Coast summer:

•          Wear UV400 sunglasses whenever you are outdoors, including on overcast days

•          Choose larger or wraparound frames to limit sunlight entering from the sides

•          Pair sunglasses with a wide-brimmed hat for additional shade

•          Keep protective sunglasses available in your car, bag, or child’s backpack

For sports, yardwork, and other activities where debris may be present, use appropriate protective eyewear rather than relying on ordinary sunglasses alone.

Pay Attention to Changes in Your Vision

UV protection is only one part of maintaining healthy eyesight. Schedule an eye exam if you notice blurred vision, increased glare, light sensitivity, eye irritation, or other changes. Regular eye care allows us to evaluate your vision and check for conditions that may develop without obvious early symptoms.
