LASIK is a popular option for people who want clearer vision without relying as heavily on glasses or contact lenses, but candidacy depends on more than your prescription. The health, shape, and thickness of your cornea all play an important role in determining whether LASIK is a safe and effective choice. Because LASIK reshapes the cornea to correct vision, measuring corneal thickness is one of the key steps in a personalized LASIK evaluation.
A LASIK consultation is more detailed than a standard vision check. Your eye care team will look at your prescription, eye health, tear film, corneal shape, and corneal thickness. These measurements help determine whether LASIK is safe, predictable, and appropriate for your vision goals.
Corneal thickness is typically measured with advanced diagnostic testing. If the cornea is too thin, removing tissue during LASIK may increase the risk of complications or unstable vision changes over time. This does not always mean vision correction is off the table, but it may mean another option is better suited for your eyes.
Corneal thickness is important, but it is only one part of the full evaluation. Your surgeon may also consider:
• Your current glasses or contact lens prescription
• Whether your prescription has been stable
• The shape and curvature of your cornea
• Signs of dry eye or other surface concerns
• Your age, lifestyle, and long-term vision goals
• Any history of eye disease or previous eye surgery
This is why a personalized LASIK evaluation matters. Two patients may have similar prescriptions but very different recommendations based on their corneal measurements and overall eye health.
If your corneas are not ideal for LASIK, your surgeon may discuss other vision correction options. Depending on your eyes, alternatives may include PRK, implantable contact lenses, or another customized approach. PRK can sometimes be recommended for patients with thinner corneas because it does not require the same type of corneal flap created during LASIK.
The goal is not simply to qualify you for a procedure. The goal is to recommend the safest and most effective option for your eyes.
